Our Transdisciplinary Philosophy

We integrate educational, medical, and therapeutic services throughout the school day.

STUDENT SERVICES

The Lehmann School utilizes a transdisciplinary philosophy in the delivery of services. A core group of professionals work together consistently over time, pooling and exchanging information, knowledge, and skills. The team may include teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, computer instructors, rehabilitation engineers, other professionals and paraprofessionals, as needed, and of course, the client and/or family. In addition, we provide individual, group, and consultative services aligned with the student’s IEP.

Below are descriptions of some of the related services we provide.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy covers a broad spectrum of services. Feeding, oral motor skills, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) are just some of the therapeutic needs our Speech Therapy Team provides. Our AAC program is a spectrum of unaided and aided systems. Our systems range from basic to high- tech. Communication is key for every child, and they will progressively work through each level of prerequisite skills to continually advance their technology skills.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is dynamic with our school’s diverse population. The program focuses on motor development, sensory integration, visual perception, and activities of daily living. From the onset of assessment, therapists are planning fabrication and the design of adaptive equipment. In addition, they are thinking about environmental modifications and determining and establishing goals and objectives appropriate to propel growth and development of necessary skills.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy encapsulates many different meanings when working with our students with multiple physical and developmental needs. Our physical therapists are experts in movement and design and perform therapeutic interventions that focus on functional mobility. Our students are assessed by an onsite Physiatrist and Orthotic Clinicians who collaborate with the student’s Transdisciplinary team, including parents, to procure specialized equipment needed for success.

Nursing

Many of our students come to us with different individualized health plans. Our skilled nursing team works closely with families and physicians (all areas) to ensure the student’s health and safety. Nurses work with the student’s transdisciplinary team to ensure medical care is addressed in their natural school setting as not to disrupt educational or therapeutic programming. Our collaborative model allows for open communication promoting our students level of success even with the most dynamic medical and therapeutic needs.

In addition, our school has policies and procedures in place for emergency medical situations. Should the need arise, our nurses are ready to transition students back to their program seamlessly and without hesitation if there is a disruption in their academic program due to medical intervention.
